RARP (Robotic Assisted Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy)
RARP is an operation to cure prostate cancer by the completely removing all of the prostate and the attached seminal vesicles. You will also have a vasectomy close to the prostate gland.
Care of the Patient Undergoing RARP
Prostate cancer has many treatment options. In addition to open retropubic and perineal approaches to radical prostatectomy, laparoscopic robotic prostatectomy is available as a newer surgical option. Potential advantages of robotic surgery include reduced pain and trauma, less blood loss, reduced infection risk, shorter hospital stay, faster recovery, and less scarring (Intuitive Surgical, 2005).
DXT Disadvantages
- Urinary and rectal side effects are common and long term
- In high risk disease dose may not be sufficient
- Dose escalation increases rectal toxicity
- Late failure
- Lack of second line options
